I am so glad I lucked out and was able to find a house with none of that nonsense.

Well simple solution is to not buy Ina development or condo/complex

That is pretty hard to do in big cities like Houston (where I live) if you want to stay anywhere close to downtown. My house is luckily in its own little old neighborhood which is made up of just the houses on the cul-de-sac.

They definitely have upsides and downsides. I can never figure out which one my HOA has more of...

Yup, me too. PRO: I can keep my cars (and their parts) in my driveway and nobody can say shit. CON: Only two yards are even remotely aesthetically pleasing; mine and my neighbors'

I've lived in an HOA controlled condo complex for the last 10 years. Our first management company we had to kick out after we discovered they were using our funds to pay for repairs to their own projects. Once we picked a new management company it's actually been nice having it. They take care of everything quickly and have kept the complex from going to shit during the economic downturn.

Some people don't get the idea that the house you want may be in a planned community. Not sure why that's difficult to grasp, but it is apparently.

Having lived in both, there are also huge negatives to not having one as well. In my current neighborhood a couple of folks got completely screwed when some weirdos moved in between them, dumped rocks over the entire front yard, and installed what could best be described as a hippy art installation (there are 6 foot statues of hands and feet, weird copper 'art pieces', etc). When one of the neighbors got transferred for work his house was devalued ~20% (80k) because nobody wants to pay full price to live next to these idiots.

No HOA was a requirement when we bought house 2. I was tired of them not doing much and the fact that we paid and a bunch of people didn't. Deadbeats!

Yea that does suck. Luckily everyone on our cul-de-sac has owned their houses for more than a decade, and aren't going anywhere soon.

There are city zoning and ordinance laws that apply to silliness like that too.

Never spend real money on something you don't actually own. Say no to HOAs / Condos. Buy your own chunk of dirt that's truly yours if at all possible.
